Guru Pradosh Vrat (Brihaspati Pradosh Vrat)

Guru Pradosh Vrat, according to Hindu Panchang is the day when Jupiter and Shivay are worshipped together. On Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshipped and on Trayodashi, Shivay is worshipped. On Thursday, you must also remember to worship Lord Brihaspati. Lord Brihaspati is friendly to Shiva and thus, worshipping both of them together would be immensely beneficial for you and your family.

Lord Brihaspati usually prefers yellow sweets and prefers wearing yellow clothes. Yellow is his favorite colour and it is also the colour of hope and happiness- the yellow glow.

Importance of Guru Pradosh Vrat

1) Guru Pradosh Vrat helps you obtain success in every direction and you can solve the hardest of all problems by observing this Pradosh Vrat. But for obtaining success, you may need to do the following:

On the day of the Guru Pradosh Vrat, add a little saffron or Kevde ka itr (perfume) into the water and take a bath.
Wear light yellow colored clothes on this day.

2) You can bring an end to the problems in the family by

Light a Diya of ghee on the Peepal tree
Offer some yellow sweet and some yellow flowers and cloth to the tree.
Chant the following mantra 27 times to get rid of all the problems from home.

“Om Krishnaya Vasudevaya Haraye Parmatmane Pranataha Klesh Nashaya Govindaya Namo Namaha”

3) You can be blessed with nice children when you observe this Guru Pradosh Vrat.

4) You can be successful in works related to fields that need application of your wisdom like writing, and scientific pursuits by observing this fast.

Thus, observing this day would ensure you not only receive the blessings of Shiva and Parvati but also Jupiter’s blessings. Try to remain calm for the whole day. Reason being, that Jupiter is the calmest place of all and to save Jupiter it is believed, God gave him the huge clouds of fire that keep people away from Jupiter. Keeping your calm is extremely important during this whole prayer session and keep a vigil at night. Break your fast the next day after pouring water on the Shivling.

According to this legend, once Indra and Vritasur fought each other alongside their army. The Gods defeated the Daityas and completely destroyed them in the fight. Now, Vritrasura was very angry seeing all this and he himself came out to fight in the battle.

With his demonic forces he took a shape bigger than one could imagine and began to threaten the Gods. The Devtas feared annihilation and thus went to Lord Brihaspati for shelter.

Lord Brihaspati was the most calm and most intellectual. In order to calm the Gods, he began narrating the original story of Vritrasura- as to who he was or what he was.

According to Brihaspati, Vritrasura was a great man- he was a Tapasvi, one of his kinds and was extremely devoted to his work. Vritasur meditated on the mountains of Gandmadan and his meditations made Shivji happy.

In earlier times, there was a king by the name of Chitrarath. Once Chitrarath sat on his Vimaan and glided off to Kailash Parvat. Upon reaching Kailash, his eyes fell upon Parvati, who sat on the left side of Shiva on the same seat.

Seeing her on the same seat as Shiva, he made fun of all this, saying that he had heard that, as humans are trapped in the cycle of Moh-Maya, being bewitched by women is not ordinary but, he had never found any women sitting side by side, almost hugging the king in front of his court of people.

Upon hearing these words, Shivay smiled and said that his views about the world were different and quite varied. Shiva said that he drank the poison to save the world. Mata Parvati became angry, and cursed Chitrarath for making fun of Lord Shiva to turn into a demon and fall back on Earth.

Due to Jagadamba Bhavani’s curse, Chitrarath was born into a demon Yoni. Tweshta Rishi meditated and his highest meditations created Vritrasura. Vritrasura was a Shiva’s disciple from his early childhood and hence defeating him, according to Brihaspati Dev was not possible unless Indra performed the Brihaspati Pradosh Vrat to satiate Shiva and Parvati together.

Devaraj Indra performed the Guru Pradosh Vrat and very soon he was able to defeat Vritrasura and peace returned to Heaven. Thus, Pradosh Vrat on a Thursday should be done by every single person who wants to receive the blessings of Mahadev and Devi Parvati.

Guru Pradosh Vrat Vidhi

Guru Pradosh Vrat has an elaborate process and you may require a lot of patience to perform this Vrat.

Take a bath and free your mind from all the problems. Now, do the following,

Take a brass tumbler and add turmeric, jaggery and gram seeds, soak them for some time.
Add the ingredients in the tumbler along with the roots of the banana tree and burn a Diya with cow ghee.
Sit there on a mat and chant the Brihaspati Stotram thrice.
Collect some mud from the roots of the banana tree
Add some water and make a paste.
Apply the tilak of this mud on the husband and the wife, if both have observed the Vrat.
