When is Padmini Ekadashi Vrat in 2020?
On 27 september, 2020 is the Padmini Ekadashi for this year. Padmini Ekadashi has a legend too. It is the eleventh day or Ekadashi of the brighter Moon in the Adhika month (June-July).

The significance of Padmini Ekadashi resides in the below tale.
Now, there lived a King as always lives, and his name happened to be none other than Kartaveerya.
He had many wives, lived an extremely lavish life, and served his subjects very well. Every Pooja, every Daan dakshina (donations of all sorts) was given by him to others. But, he had pain, his pain was immense. Despite doing everything, he was not able to live a happy life; he did not have a child who could ascend the throne after him.
He consulted several wise men and sages who told him that it was all due to sins of his previous birth. In his previous birth, whatever wrong he did was preventing him from having a happy life in this birth. So he called all his ministers and asked them if they could manage the kingdom without him.
They all agreed to do so, and the king left for the forest with only one queen by his side to assist him in the process. Her name was Padmini. The king spent years worshipping Lord Vishnu. He underwent a very hard penance. Severe penance for thousands of years weakened him. There was a great Rishi, one of the seven Rishis- Saptarishis near him. Rishi Atri and his chaste wife, extremely virtuous and pure. Her name was Anusuya.
Padmini often communicated with Anusuya. One day she spoke to her about the plight of her husband. Anusuya suggested Padmini to pray to Lord Vishnu on the Ekadashi of the Adhika month. She agreed to do so, and then she organized a big Pooja on that very day.
She woke up early in the morning and bathed very devotedly.
She cleaned her hut and arranged a very beautiful prayer service for Lord Vishnu. Grand arrangement of flowers and a very beautiful idol of Lord Vishnu she placed on the temple. She recited the holy hymns and was very vigilant about not straying even once from her thoughts, during that day.
She was awake the whole night too and the next day also she worshipped Lord Vishnu with all her heart. She invited a Brahmin from the nearby village and served him delicious foods. After all that, when she was about to break her fast, God appeared before him. Lord Vishnu asked her if she had any desire that she wished to be fulfilled.
She asked if Sri Vishnu could appear before her husband and bless him with a son. Lord Vishnu did appear before the King and blessed them with the son, Karthaveeryarjuna, the one who could be killed only by Lord Vishnu alone.
Thus, this day was popularly called Padmini Ekadashi.
Rituals and Rules to be observed during Padmini Ekadashi
Please observe the following rules if you are keeping the Padmini Ekadashi Vrat.
- Early in the morning wake up and bathe before sunrise. Clean your body and soul both, by chanting hymns close to your heart.
- Fasting is the ritual you must try to observe at any cost, it is known as the Padmini Ekadashi Fast. Try to avoid Urad ki dal, rice, spinach, chick peas and honey. If you cannot keep a complete fast, you are allowed to eat fruits and dairy products in such circumstances.
- On the tenth day, on Dashami before the Padmini Ekadashi fast, the devotee must eat a healthy “satvik” food once and it should be a light food without onion and garlic in it. Avoid eating in utensils made up of bronze.
- Try to remain awake on the night of Padmini Ekadashi and if you need to sleep since you would have some urgent work the next day, try to sleep on the floor. The next morning, the Vrat would come to an end.
- Do a Panchamrit Abhishek of Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves, incense sticks, light a candle and a dhoop if possible on the day after Padmini Ekadashi.
- Worshippers of Lord Vishnu can chant hymns of Vishnu or listen to songs of Vishnu during the evening hours. Try to read Vishnu Sahasranama and also try to read other books that you like, like the Upanishads and the Vishnu Purana. You can simply chant his name if nothing else is available to you. You can also chant the Padmini Ekadashi Vrat Katha on this evening.
- You can offer food, clothes and other items to someone who is extremely needy in the society, someone at a lower level than you are in, on the day of Padmini Ekadashi.
Importance of Padmini Ekadashi
Skanda Purana mentions the importance of Padmini Ekadashi and Lord Krishna had given clear directions to Dharmaraj Yudhisthira as to how he must keep the Vrat. Padmini Ekadashi is the day when it is believed that you can wash the sins of your past and present lives all together. If you are searching for a place in the Vaikunta, known famously to be Lord Vaikunta’s abode, then you must definitely keep the Padmini Ekadashi, on the eleventh day of the Adhika month.
