Som Pradosh Vrat Katha (Story)

The legend behind Som Pradosh/ Trayodashi Vrat Katha dates back to the time when the demons and the Gods ruled the Earth. If you have ever read the history of the Satya Yuga, you might know that the Devas ruled the heavenly portions of Earth, the ones that were connected to Heaven and the Asuras ruled the rest of the Earth. Manavas were a race who lived amidst the Asuras mostly, since very few humans were allowed to transcend into heavens even then, so it is believed.

Now these Asuras always had an eye for the heavens and they created huge ruckus everytime. They left no stone unturned to reach the heavens, and would use every opportunity to harass, humiliate and fight the Gods.

During one such event, when the demons created a huge ruckus and the Devas could no longer manage it, they requested Lord Shiva to interfere. The Gods, this time feared extinction and wanted Shivay to find a solution to their growing problem. Lord Shiva heard the prayers of the Gods and destroyed the clans of the demons.

There is another legend behind it.

It is believed that long ago there was a widow Brahmani who lived with his son and begged for a living. One day she met a Prince, who she found on the road. He was the Prince of Vidarbha and there were some looters who killed his father, the King of Vidarbha and occupied the whole kingdom. Meanwhile, the Prince escaped and after a few days just collapsed due to thirst and hunger.

The Brahmani took him home and treated him like his own son. One day the Brahmani took both of them to Shandilya Rishis Ashram and heard of the Som Pradosh Vrat. While returning, the Prince went to roam around whereas the Brahmani returned home with her son.

While doing so, he met a Gandharva girl who was playing around in a place and her name was Anshumati. That day the Prince spoke to the Gandharva girl for long before returning home late. Next day, Prince returned to the same place where he had met Anshumati. That day, she was talking to her parents there and upon meeting the Prince, her mom and dad immediately recognized him as the Prince of Vidarbha, Dharmagupt, to which the Prince agreed.

They liked the Prince and that night they dreamt of Lord Shiva, who was telling them in their dreams that they should marry off their daughter to Dharmagupta. Next day, they spoke to Dharmagupta and he agreed to the bond.

They got married on an auspicious day and then attacked his own kingdom overthrowing the looters from the throne and conquering the throne once again, only to be declared as the king of Vidarbha.

Post his coronation he brought the widow Brahmani and his son into the palace. He made the son of the Brahmani, his Prime Minister and kept both of them in the palace with great respect and honour.

When Anshumati asked him about his life story, Dharmagupta told her the entire story and also told her about the Som Pradosh Vrat and its importance.

This is when the Som Pradosh Vrat gained prominence in the world.
