Why is Amavasya Considered as Inauspicious

Why is Amavasya Considered as Inauspicious

Updated Date : मंगलवार, 23 जून, 2020 11:15 पूर्वाह्न

According to Hindu religion, Amavasya is a time when great power can be accumulated. People are thus expected to fast on this day. Question is why is Amavasya considered inauspicious? Amavasya is quite inauspicious as it is believed that the evil spirits are strong and roam free during this day particularly. It is this day when dark magic or Tantra can easily reach its fullness.

Significance of Amavasya

Diwali is considered to be the most inauspicious and darkest night of the year. Thus, Gods like Maha Kali and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped on this day.

When the Amavasya falls on a Monday, if a fast is undertaken on this day, it would ensure freedom from widowhood and also ensures a prosperous progeny. Lord Shiva is also worshipped on Amavasya since he is the controller of all evil and good forces in the world. In order to ensure that the active Evil force doesn’t harm us on this day, Lord Shiva is worshipped for protection from these forces.

Every Amavasya is considered auspicious for worshipping the forefathers. Shraadh can be done on Amavasya for the forefathers. This Puja also ensures good births in the family- children who have no physical or mental birth defects. Whatever offerings you make on this day, reach the ancestors according to the grace of Yama.

People worship Goddess Durga, Lord Narsimha, Lord Hanuman and Lord Saturn are usually worshipped on this day, also to get rid of evil spirits and other such astro troubles. Sri Krishna’s Niraayana also happened on the day of Amavasya. On this day, Tantric remedies are sought after target points especially on Sundays and Tuesdays. Amavasya is the name given to Achhoda, Manasa putrika (daughter born out of the mind of the Pitru Devatas).

Legend behind the inauspiciousness of the tithi of Amavasya

There were in total seven Groups of Pitri Devatas-

  1. Vyrajas
  2. Agnishwatthas
  3. Barhishadas
  4. Sukalas
  5. Angirass
  6. Suswadhas
  7. Somapas

Achhoda was born out of the minds of the seven Pitru Devatas and once she did a strong penance, according to Matsya Puran, and pleased by her prayers, they appeared before her. But, suddenly she was fascinated by one of the Pitru Devatas called Mavasa. But, Mavasa did not show any reaction for her, thus Achhoda was referred to as Amavasya. Achhoda thus lost her divinity due to an unexpected fervid reaction.

Since they were pleased by her penance, they grew sympathetic towards her situation. Pitru Devatas offered her a blessing that the favorite day of the Pitru Devatas would be called Amavasya thereon. They also said, whoever did Pitru Karma on Amavasya would receive the blessings of the Pitru Devatas. They promised to bestow sumptuousness to those people who performed Pitra Shraadh on the day of Amavasya.

Due to the divine Sankalp, Achhoda was born on Earth in the 28th Dwapara Yuga in the womb of a fish. She was brought up by a fisherman called Vasu and she was called Matsyagandha. Matsyagandha used to go fishing like her father. She was very extremely beautiful and while returning from his pilgrimage Rishi Parashar came upon the shores of Yamuna River. Thereupon his eyes fell upon Matsyagandha and he was enveloped by his desire to make love with her. Parashar expressed his desire but Matsyagandha indicated to the line of Rishis standing on both shores waiting to be transported here and there. So Parashar Muni created a dense fog and asked her again. She expressed her concern about losing virginity and again living back in society. So Rishi Parashar promised her that he would restore her virginity and also make her sweet smelling.

He kept his promise and in due course of her time, she gave birth to a dark-skinned son born on an island and was named as Krishna Dwaipayana. Dwaipayana came to be known as Rishi Ved Vyas later and composed the Mahabharata. King Shantanu married Matsyagandha, also known as Satyavati by now.

Satyavati became the centre of the entire history that unearthed after the story of Mahabharata came into existence.

Adverse Effects of Amavasya on Human Body

No auspicious activity is performed during this day. Some people do not even journey on this day considering the inauspiciousness of the day.

It has an adverse impact on the human body, and also impacts the nature of the humans as well as their behavior. The new born babies are also impacted by the energies prevalent during Amavasya.

Our subconscious mind is impacted on Amavasya and is quite vulnerable.

Our mental state and physical state is quite unbalanced on this particular Moonless night. We can feel everything more on this very night and all the emotions are at their peak on this night. Some people lose control on this particular night and behave in a strange manner.

When Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, the Moon cannot be seen anymore, officially termed as the New Moon. Astrologically, the Sun and the Moon come together in the same degree in the same Zodiac sign. For a Tithi, the distance between the Sun and the Moon is fixed at 12 degrees. Generally, 0-12 degrees is known as Amavasya.

When the planet is conjunct with the Sun, it is considered inauspicious for some of the auspicious ceremonies. Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter is also inauspicious for various ceremonies and occasions.

So, ideally if we consider the Moon to be our mind and Sun to be our Atman then the ultimate aim of a human being should be to bring both together. This state is called Samadhi and since on this New Moon, both the Sun and the Moon in the sky are in close proximity, bound by Nature our mind and soul also have a capability to come together. Thus, we observe all the unusual activities within our body when the mind and the soul are attempting to close into each other.

For those, whose mind and soul are very much disconnected face a lot of issues in this phase of Amavasya and those whose mind and soul are aligned can aim to gain higher powers during this period of day and night. People often are known to be practicing black magic and Evil actions on this very night.

Do’s and don’ts during Amavasya

Amavasya can be the day when you get rid of all the problems- whether mental, physical or economical hardships.
