Annaprashan Muhurat and Annoprashan Sanskar Dates
Annaprashan Sanskar or Anna Grahan Sanskar means feeding food in the Sanskrit language. In Hinduism, Annaprashan is considered as an important Sanskar out of the sixteen Sanskar suggested by Hindu scriptures. Annaprashan Sanskar is the seventh Sanskar in which the child is fed with solid food for the first time. This is a mandatory ceremony that is performed with proper Hindu rituals and customs. Like the other important Hindu rituals, the Annaprashan ceremony is also performed in an auspicious Annaprashan Muhurat.
What is the Annaprashan Ceremony?
Annaprashan Ceremony is the first rice eating ceremony for a baby. In this ceremony, the baby is first fed with solid food such as rice. It is done when the baby is ready to make the move from liquids to solids. After Annaprashan Sanskar, solid food is introduced into the baby’s diet. This ritual is also known as “Mukhe Bhaat” in Bengal, “Bhaatkhula Rasm” in Garhwal Hills and “Choroonu” in Kerala. Apart from Hinduism, Annaprashan or Anna grahan Sanskar is also performed by the Parsi community.

For boys, Annaprashan Ceremony is performed during even months, i.e., sixth or eighth month. While for girls, the Annaprashan Sanskar is performed during the odd months, i.e. the fifth or seventh month of the baby.
Where and How Annaprashan Should Be Performed?
Annaprashan ceremony can be held at home or the temple. If the ceremony is performed at home, then one should invite family, relatives and friends. All the Hindu rituals of Annaprashan Sansakar should be performed under the guidance of the Priest.
As Annaprashan Sankskar is an important ceremony for the baby’s life, it is necessary to perform it on an Anna grahan auspicious date and time. On the auspicious date of Annaprashan Muhurat, the baby should be bathed and dressed properly in the new clothes.
On the auspicious Annaprashan Muhurat, a havan is conducted and offerings are given to the deities. Afterward, as a symbolic feeding, the Prasad or first bite of solid food is given to the baby. A feast is served to the guests at the end of the event.
