Diwali History
There are no authentic records that can state the exact origin of Diwali. The triumph of good over evil is one thing that is accepted worldwide.
There is no doubt that different parts of the country celebrate this auspicious day due to different reasons. In northern India, this day is regarded as the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife Sita, brother Lakshman, and Hanuman after defeating evil king Ravana. The night they returned was a moonless night (Amavasya), this is the reason why people light earthen pots on the night of Diwali. In contrast, South Indians celebrate the occasion as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.
It is also said that on this day, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi tied knots with each other. Some legends also believe that Goddess Lakshmi was born on the 15th day of Kartik month (i.e., new moon day).
