Tamil Calendar (தமிழ் பஞ்சங்கம்)

Tamil Calendar or Tamil Panchangam is used by Tamil natives of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Malaysia, Singapore and Srilanka. It is based on Solar calendar that follows a 60-year cycle The days in Tamil Panchang starts with Sunrise and ends with Sunset.

In a Tamil Panchangam, Sunday refers to Njyāyitru-kizhamai (ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை), Monday refers to Thingat-kizhamai (திங்கட்கிழமை), Tuesday refers to Sevvāi-kizhamai (செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை), Wednesday refers to pudhan-kizhamai ( புதன்கிழமை), Thursday refers to viyāzha-kizhamai (வியாழக்கிழமை), Friday refers to VeLLi-kizhamai (வெள்ளிக்கிழமை) and Saturday refers to sani-kizhamai (சனிக்கிழமை).

There are twelve months in a tamil Calendar with each month having 29 or 32 days. The twelve months are- Sitthirai (சித்திரை), Vaikāsi (வைகாசி), Ani (ஆனி), Adi (ஆடி), Āvaṇi (ஆவணி), Puraṭṭāsi (புரட்டாசி), Aippasi (ஐப்பசி), Kārtthikai (கார்த்திகை), Mārkazhi (மார்கழி), Tai (தை), Māsi (மாசி), Paṅkuni (பங்குனி).

New Year: Tamil New year begins on the first date of Chithirai month. It falls on 14 April of the Gregorian Calendar. Chithirai Thiruvizha (சித்திரைத் திருவிழா) is celebrated the first month.
