Ravan Dahan, Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi, is celebrated by burning some of the biggest Ravan effigies in India.

It might be quite surprising to learn that Ravana is worshipped in some places, people actually take their children to take blessings of Ravana, so that they can excel in education, because Ravana was the most literate being on Earth at one time.

Ravan Dahan Story 

Back in the days, Ravana was considered the most knowledged and intelligent being on Earth. His devotion for Lord Shiva is still spoken of, however, the only thing that killed him was his ego.

He was so proud of his own achievements that he couldn’t handle it when Lord Rama left him behind in the pursuit of marrying Sita. 

Even though Ravana showed off his intelligence, strength and built, he was unable to lift the Dhanush that Lord Ram did and married Sita. 

Raging anger and bruised ego, led Ravana to kidnap Devi Sita from the forest and then began the great fight between Lord Ram and Ravana. 

On the 10th day of the bright fortnight in the Ashwin month of Hindu calender, Lord Rama was able to slay the demon king Ravana, who was very sure that no one on this Earth is powerful enough to kill him, because of the wish that Lord Shiva had granted him.

The day when Lord Rama killed Ravan to free his wife Devi Sita from his captivity, is now celebrated as Dussehra. On this day, huge effigies of Ravana are erected and exhibited to the whole world, and later in the evening, it is burnt. 

Why build such huge effigies and then burn them down to ashes? 

To show it to the World, that no matter how tall your grow, if you are standing on the legs of ego, you will be burnt to ashes in no time. 

On this day, some of the biggest Ravan dahan in India can be observed in Delhi and Haryana.

Surprising Facts About Dussehra

Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami tithi of the brighter days, in Ashwin month, which follows the nine day long Maha Navratri festival, and in Some places, like Kolkata, Dussehra is celebrated as Durga Puja because it is believed that Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura demon on this day. This is the reason that this day is also called as Vijayadashmi. 

Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, has a temple dedicated to Ravana, because it is believed that Ravana’s wife, Mandodari hailed from this village, and this makes Ravana their Son-in-law, and this is the reason the people in Mandsaur, not only respect but also worship Ravana. 

Dussehra is celebrated in different ways in different corners of the country. Some of the most famous Dussehra celebrations are - Mysore Dussehra, Kullu Dussehra, Bastar Dussehra, Dussehra in Varanasi. 

Reasons and ways of celebration might differ in different parts of the country, however, there is still one thing that is commonly celebrated- the victory of righteousness over cruelty.
