As per Vedic astrology, On Purnima or full moon day, the sky is under the celestial domination of Shravana Nakshatra. Thus, Shravana month derives its name from its governing star “Shravana”. In this holy month, all the days are considered auspicious, however, Mondays of Shravana month holds great importance. Shravana Somwars are considered auspicious due to its association with Lord Shiva.

According to legends, Samudra Manthan (the churning of oceans) was done by Gods and demons in the month of Sawan to attain Amrit. In this process, fourteen rubies including Halahala (poison) emerged from the ocean. All the rubies except Halahal were distributed among demons and Gods. Since Halahal was the most dreadful poison, it started destroying all life forms after its emergence. To stop this, all the demons and Gods prayed to Lord Shiva who then drank the Halahal and saved the Universe. Due to Halahal’s poisonous effect, Lord Shiva’s throat became blue and he was named “Neelkanth”. Lord Shiva adorned the crescent Moon to calm down Shiva and reduce Halahal effects. Since then, the tradition to offer Gangajal to Lord Shiva was propagated.
