Shravana Month
Shravana month is considered to be the 5th Lunar month in the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, this month falls between July-August.
The lunar month is marked by two methods in the Hindu calendar. In the 1st method, the Lunar month marks its presence from Purnima to Purnima which is known as the Purnimanta calendar whereas in another method Lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya which is known as the Amanta calendar.
Some important festivals of Shravana month are Kamika Ekadashi, Shravan Somwar Vrats, Mangala Gauri Vrats, Raksha Bandhan.
List of Shravana Month Festivals-
- Kamika Ekadashi- It is one of the 24 vrats of Ekadashi which is kept by people to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
- Shravan Somwar Vrats- These vrats are kept on all the Mondays or Somvars of the Shravan month. Fasting on the Mondays of Shravana Month is considered highly auspicious.
- Mangala Gauri Vrats- this vrat is kept by married women for their conjugal felicity and the well-being of their family.
- Hariyali Teej- This occasion is celebrated to seek marital bliss and for the well-being of married women’s families. Hariyali Teej signifies the union of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva.
- Nag Panchami- On the occasion of Nag Panchami women offer milk to Snake and worship them for the well-being of her brother and family.
- Shravana Putrada Ekadashi- This Ekadashi is one out of the 24 Ekadashi which is associated with Lord Vishnu as people seek his blessings on this day.
- Varalakshmi Vrat- Fast is observed on this day to make goddess Lakshmi (Consort of Lord Vishnu) happy.
- Raksha Bandhan- This festival is celebrated to nourish and strengthen the bond between brother-sisters. Sisters tie a sacred thread around the wrist of their brothers on this occasion.
- Gayatri Jayanti- This occasion is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goddess Gayatri who is the Goddess of Veda.
- Kalki Jayanti- Kalki is the 10th and the last Avatar of Lord Vishnu who will emerge at the end of Kali Yug. Thus, Kalki Jayanti is the future birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu.
- Hayagriva Jayanti- This is the birth anniversary of Lord Hayagriva who is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
- Narali Purnima- Narali Purnima is known as Shravana Purnima in Maharashtra. Lord Varun (god of the sea) is worshipped on this day.
- Sanskrit Diwas- Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages and therefore Sanskrit Diwas is celebrated to show the importance of the Sanskrit Language.
