माँ दुर्गा की नौ शक्तियों की तीसरी स्वरूप माँ चंद्रघंटा की नवरात्री के तीसरे दिन अर्चना की जाती है. माता के मस्तक पर घंटाकार के अर्धचंद्र के कारण इनको चंद्रघंटा कहा जाता है. माँ का शरीर स्वर्ण के समान उज्जवल है, वे सिंह पर आरूढ हैं तथा दस हाथों में विभिन्न प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्र लिए हुई हैं. सिंहारूड माँ चंद्रघंटा युद्ध के लिए तत्पर हैं एवं उनके घंटे से निकलने वाली प्रचंड ध्वनि असुरों को भयभीत करती है. माता चंद्रघंटा की उपासना साधक को आध्यात्मिक एवं आत्मिक शक्ति प्रदान करती है. नवरात्री के तीसरे दिन माता चंद्रघंटा की साधना कर दुर्गा सप्तशती का पाठ करने वाले उपासक को संसार में यश, कीर्ति एवं सम्मान मिलता है.

माँ का स्वरूप अत्यंत सौम्यता एवं शांति से परिपूर्ण है. इनकी अराधना करने वाले में वीरता, निर्भयता के साथ-साथ सौम्यता और विनम्रता का संचार उसके मुख, नेत्र तथा सम्पूर्ण काया में कान्ति-गुण का विकास करता है. स्वर दिव्य हो जाता है एवं उसमें अलौकिक माधुर्य का वास होता है. इनके भक्त के आगमन से वातावरण में सुख-शांति का संचार होता है.

माँ चंद्रघंटा के साधक के शरीर से दिव्या प्रकाशयुक्त परमाणुओं का सतत विकरण होता रहता है जो साधारण चक्षुओं से दिखाई नहीं देता है परन्तु आराधक एवं उसके संपर्क में आने वाले व्यक्ति इसका अनुभव करते हैं.

दुर्गा जी का तीसरा अवतार चंद्रघंटा हैं। देवी के माथे पर घंटे के आकार का अर्धचंद्र होने के कारण इन्हें चंद्रघंटा कहा जाता है। अपने मस्तक पर घंटे के आकार के अर्धचन्द्र को धारण करने के कारण माँ "चंद्रघंटा" नाम से पुकारी जाती हैं। अपने वाहन सिंह पर सवार माँ का यह स्वरुप युद्ध व दुष्टों का नाश करने के लिए तत्पर रहता है। चंद्रघंटा को स्वर की देवी भी कहा जाता है।

 तीसरे दिन की पूजा में माता की चौकी पर माता चंद्रघंटा की प्रतिमा या तस्वीर स्थापित करें। इसके बाद गंगा जल या गोमूत्र से शुद्धिकरण करें। चौकी पर चांदी, तांबे या मिट्टी के घड़े में जल भरकर उस पर नारियल रखकर कलश स्थापना करें।

इसके बाद पूजन का संकल्प लें और वैदिक एवं सप्तशती मंत्रों द्वारा मां चंद्रघंटा सहित समस्त स्थापित देवताओं की षोडशोपचार पूजा करें। इसमें आवाहन, आसन, पाद्य, अध्र्य, आचमन, स्नान, वस्त्र, सौभाग्य सूत्र, चंदन, रोली, हल्दी, सिंदूर, दुर्वा, बिल्वपत्र, आभूषण, पुष्प-हार, सुगंधित द्रव्य, धूप-दीप, नैवेद्य, फल, पान, दक्षिणा, आरती, प्रदक्षिणा, मंत्रपुष्पांजलि आदि करें। तत्पश्चात प्रसाद वितरण कर पूजन संपन्न करें।

मां चंद्रघंटा को दूध और उससे बनी चीजों का भोग लगाएं और और इसी का दान भी करें। ऐसा करने से मां खुश होती हैं और सभी दुखों का नाश करती हैं। इसमें भी मां चंद्रघंटा को मखाने की खीर का भोग लगाना श्रेयस्कर माना गया है।

Navratri is celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm in every part of India. Navratri i.e. 9 nights is a 9 day long celebration with each day holding a distinct significance. It is a festival dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms. Each day is associated with one form of Maa Durga. The third day of Navratri celebrations is dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta.

Origin - Maa Chandraghanta is the married form of Maa Parvati. Mata Mahagauri after getting married to Lord Shiva started adorning her forehead with half Moon (Chandra). This is the reason Goddess Parvati was called to be Goddess Chandraghanta.

Goddess Chandraghanta is considered as the third avatar of Goddess Durga who is worshipped by the devotees on the 3rd day of Navratri. They sing Mata Chandraghanta aarti and listen to the third day Navratri Katha. Some also recite Maa Chandraghanta chalisa and mantra to appease her.

She brings tranquility, prosperity and peace in life when worshipped.

She is supposed to have a half moon or a ‘Chandra’ placed on her forehead in the shape of a bell or a ‘Ghanta’.

She is believed to be very charming with a golden bright complexion and she rides a lion. Mata Chandraghanta is depicted with ten hands.

In her four left arms she carries Trishul, Gada, Sword and Kamandal and the fifth left arm is in the Varada Mudra. In her four right arms she carries lotus flower, Arrow, Dhanush(bow) and Japa Mala.

The fifth right hand is in the Abhaya Mudra. It is believed that worshipping Mata Chandraghanta will bestow its devotees with grace, bravery and courage.

Her blessings can eliminate all the sins, physical sufferings, mental tribulations and hurdles.

Navratri Katha: Day 3 | Maa Chandraghanta Vrat Katha In English

Maa Durga had incarnated as Mata Chandraghanta to end the atrocities of demons. As per Maa Chandraghanta’s Katha, once a demon king named Mahishasura took over the throne of Indra and started ruling the heavens. They took all the powers of Indra and other gods and expelled them from the heavens. Upset from this incident, gods sought the help of Trinity or Tridev (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh). After listening to the gods, Tridev became furious. Due to the anger, an energy emitted from the mouth of Tridev.This led to the birth of Maa Chandraghanta to whom Lord Shiva gave Trident, Lord Vishnu gave Chakra, Lord Brahma gave Kamandalam and all the other deities handed over their weapons. Indra gave Vajra, Agni gave spear, Vayu offered a bow and the God of mountains gave Lion to Maa Chandraghanta. Afterward, Chandraghanta Maa’s Katha shares that the Goddess went to kill Mahishasur. Mata killed Mahishasur and saved the gods and the heavens.

Maa Chandraghanta Puja Vidhi in English

On the third day of Navratri, the puja begins with the setting up of the idol of Maa Chandraghanta. Devotees purify it with Gangaajal or Gomutra. Then, they perform Kalash sthapna by placing coconut on the water-filled pot of Silver, Copper or Earth.

Then, they take the Sankalpa for Puja and do shodopchar puja of Maa Chandraghanta along with all the established deities with Vedic and Saptashati mantras. Then, they offer all relevant pujan samagri to all the deities. Finally, they do Navratri 3rd day aarti (Maa Chandraghanta aarti) and distribute Chandraghanta Mataji’s Prasad.

Some devotees appease Maa Chandraghanta with Milk and milk products. It is believed that performing this ritual after Navratri 3rd day katha and aarti appeases Maa Chandraghanta. As a result, she bestows blessings and removes all the obstacles from the life of worshipper.
